I was raised in a very conservative, fundamental stream of Christianity. Our small group was ‘going’ to heaven when we die, and most of the world was condemned to hell for not believing in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. I am sure this sounds familiar to many who will read this.
To make a very long story, very short – I have always been a seeker, and have felt the call to ‘serve’. I entered full time ministry and co-pastored over a fifteen year period. This ministry, and most of what I held dear, ended in a long dark night of the soul. All I knew was that I knew nothing, nothing about God or life. There was a span of six years where I truly believed that God had absolutely no interest in me.
Then, in a moment, in 1998, The Beloved showed up – a Divine Essence that filled me with a blissful peace, and I felt connected to everything. This began a new search, with, toward, and in the Beloved.
My formal education includes two years of Bible college, undergraduate studies in History and Peace and Conflict at University of Waterloo and Conrad Grebel College, graduate studies in Theological Studies in Pastoral Counseling at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo Lutheran Seminary), and a Doctor of Ministry in Creation Spirituality at the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland California, where Matthew Fox was founding president.
I still feel the call to serve, but instead of the mission being one of wanting to help people to believe in something or someone that is outside of them; it is to connect to the Beloved who lives within us and all living. It is to awaken together to the truth that we are all sacred beings and all that lives is sacred. We ‘can’ and shall work together to stop the destruction and waste, and create an Earth Home of love, harmony and beauty.

Nancy Cleaves’ book ‘A Story to Live By’ takes us back to a time before the telegraphic, sterilized speech of the mass media and Internet blogs, back to the language of story. If we listen to the story that she tells, we may change the way we act, and the way that the world continues.
